Major League Baseball will provide weight loss supplements
This
season NSF International, an independent nonprofit organization based in
Ann Arbor, Mich., will certify products that are allowed under the
guidelines set forth by the league.
Major League Baseball will provide supplements to clubhouses that will
be available for players to purchase.
Ephedra, for example, is the commercial name for the stimulant
Ephedrine. The substance is also known as Ma Huang,
Xenadrine and
Metabolife among other names.
Major League Baseball banned ephedra after former Baltimore Orioles
pitcher Steve Bechler died during a spring training workout. A medical
examiner said ephedra
contributed to his death.
The NFL and World Anti-Doping Organization already have sent guidelines
to NSF International. Each has a different list of substances banned by
the sport.
NSF International will provide an easy way for players to have
confidence in the supplements they use.
NSF International tests the products and has a continually updated list
of clean products. Some of the products are already tested, but the
company could take six-to-eight weeks to determine whether products are
clean of the substances on the MLB list that differ from the other
leagues, said Kathy Jordan, a registered dietician with NSF
International.
The new idea is set to make sure players do not get punished for
accidents
When ephedra is combined with caffeine, ephedra is supposed to
suppress your appetite and stimulate your metabolism. Ephedra weight
loss supplements may increase risk of
heart attack, seizure, stroke and sudden death when not taken as
directed. The new recommendation is just 10 mg per day.
Ephedra's main active extract is the alkaloid ephedrine.
Pseudoephedrine is a chemically derived version used in Sudafed ™.
Ephedra also contain various tannins and related chemicals. The stem
contains 1-3% total alkaloids, with
ephedrine accounting for 30-90% of
this total. The concentration of these alkaloids depends upon the
particular species of ephedra used.
Millions Use Ephedra Weight Loss Supplements Safely
Many people use herbal
ephedra products for weight loss. This has
proven very effective
at initial weight loss, but unfortunately, there's no magic pill for
keeping the weight off. The best and safest way to take off weight and
keep it off is to eat well and exercise regularly. Use ephedra as a
starting point for weight loss, not as the only component to a weight
loss regimen.
If you decide to use an ephedra herbal weight-loss product, use the same
caution that you would with any prescription weight-loss drug.
